About Busy

Busy is a social planning app built by Dane Potter. It helps friend groups coordinate plans by sharing calendar availability, scheduling events, and discovering when friends are free to hang out. Busy is available as a mobile app (iOS) and a web app at busy-app.com.

What Google data does Busy access?

Busy requests read-only access to your Google account through the following scopes:

  • Email & Profile (email, profile) — Used to create and authenticate your Busy account. Your name and profile photo are displayed to friends you connect with in the app.
  • Google Calendar — Read Only (calendar.readonly) — Used to read your calendar events and determine when you are busy or free. This powers the "Find a Time" feature, which identifies mutually available time slots across a group of friends.

How does Busy use this data?

  • Authentication: Your Google email and profile are used solely to sign you in and display your identity to friends within the app.
  • Calendar availability: Busy reads your Google Calendar event times (start and end) to calculate when you are busy. Event titles are only stored if you explicitly enable "show details" in your calendar preferences. No other event metadata (attendees, descriptions, locations, attachments) is ever accessed or stored.
  • Finding free times: Calendar busy/free data is compared across friend groups to suggest times when everyone is available to hang out.

What Busy does NOT do with your data

  • Busy does not sell, share, or transfer your Google data to any third parties.
  • Busy does not use your Google data for advertising, analytics, or marketing purposes.
  • Busy does not modify, create, or delete any events on your Google Calendar.
  • Busy does not access your Google contacts, Gmail, Drive, or any other Google services.

Data storage & security

  • Google OAuth refresh tokens are encrypted using AES-256 encryption before being stored on our servers.
  • All data is transmitted over HTTPS/TLS.
  • Database access is protected by Row-Level Security — users can only access their own data.
  • Calendar data is cached temporarily and refreshed on each sync. Cached data is retained for up to one year.

Revoking access

You can revoke Busy's access to your Google data at any time:

  • In the app: disconnect Google Calendar from your profile settings.
  • In Google: visit myaccount.google.com/permissions and remove Busy.
  • Delete your account: available from the profile screen. This permanently removes all your data including your Google tokens.
